This month’s ArtSalon will be held at the Stitzer Welcome Center at Judd Gymnasia on the Springfield College Campus. The Springfield ArtSalon has been made possible with support from the Springfield Cultural Council.
Presenting artists:
Xuân Pham is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores hybridity, vulnerability, and empathy through object making and storytelling. She was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and immigrated to Omaha, Nebraska as a child. Her background greatly influences her multi-disciplinary practice and ongoing research around racialized melancholia. Her work centers the relationship between trauma, migration, and race, investigating how the political and psychological impact of trauma and grief transpires within the Asian American communities and how it informs the formation of subjectivity and of racial identity, especially in representations of race in the United States.
Kimani Worghs is a photographer and art director based in New York. He boasts a rich heritage from Ghana, Jamaica, and England. He has been featured by Vogue magazine and received awards from the International Color Awards and the Valley Photo Center. Kimani focuses on creating images that represent his take on society, culture, and fashion to inspire other creatives to make their dreams a reality. He was the Student Showcase Photographer at Springfield Technical Community College and is currently attending the Parsons School of Design, working toward earning a BAF in Photography.
Studio 234 is an artist collective based in the Indian Orchard Mills in Springfield Massachusetts. The group consists of Anthony Sarkis, Jacob Capone and Sydney Ella. Each graduates of Westfield State University, the group works out of their Springfield based studio and plays an active role in organizing the Indian Orchard Mills Open Studios Events.
Make-It Springfield, is a dynamic, eclectic learning environment that invites people of any background or skill level to explore and create, while promoting inclusion and collaboration in all forms of culture, art, and technology. Make-It Springfield provides space, tools, and vision, especially for low- and moderate-income individuals and families, to explore and work on creative projects. Make-It Springfield provides a multicultural home that invites creativity, invention, and artistic experimentation through dialogue, collaboration, and the sharing of skills and ideas. Gabriela Sepulveda is a painter and illustrator from San Juan, Puerto Rico, who graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has a Masters from Atlantic University College. She is interested in studying organic subjects in conjunction with mechanical ones and is influenced by Moebius, Camilla d’Errico, Pop Surrealism, science fiction, and comics because of their command of storytelling. Gabriela was a muralism apprentice and currently volunteers with Commonwealth Murals creating community projects all over the city. Sepulveda has received the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition and has been chosen as “The People’s Choice” among portraits displayed in The D’amour Museum of Fine Arts Community Gallery. Her work was displayed in the The Trust Transfer Project and the Springfield Museums. She plans to continue working to better her community through her art while continuing to grow her visual language
